in honor of HAPPY BLACK GIRL DAY, a day to remember to be thankful and participate in a little self-appreciation, i’m re-upping a poem i wrote back in ’08. i thought this was apropos, no?
every black girl needs a theme song.
ii.
every black girl
needs a theme song
a song that curls
up inside her
feeding her dreams
with the fruit of possibility
every black girl
needs a theme song
to echo the dreams
she is afraid to share
with the world
which tears down
faster than it can build
every black girl
needs a theme song
to sway hips, confidently
tossing shoulder back
head up, knowing
that no matter what
she can handle it
~~
what’s your theme song? (i have too many to count)
how dope was Yo Yo back in the day?
what was the last song you heard that REALLY spoke to you? share!
